The First edition 2003: A Bridge to International Recognition

The first edition of the Fujairah International Monodrama Festival started on December 2, 2003 at the Dibba Al-Fujairah Theater under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Fujairah. The main venues for the festival’s shows, workshops and other activities were Dibba Theatre, the theatre of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Community Development in Fujairah and the official hotel that hosted the festival. Ten monodrama shows were staged at the first edition of the festival. These were: (“Five Puppets” from Jordan, “Words in the Sand” from Lithuania, “The Bus and I” from Tunisia, “Men with Mustaches” from Egypt, “The Meditating Joker” from Spain, “A Debate of Day and Night” from Kuwait, “Lend me an Old Song” from Germany, “Flash” from Syria, “I could Almost See him” from Morocco, “And then she Comes” from Iraq, along with two shows from the host country (the United Arab Emirates): the opening show “Contemporary Circus” by Dibba Al-Fujairah Theatre group and “The Lantern Man” by Sharjah National Theatre group. The 1st FIMF’s guest list included theatre artists, critics and experts from Egypt, Lebanon, Iraq, Sudan, Kuwait, Jordan, Bahrain, Tunisia, Qatar, Syria, Morocco, Russia, Iran, Russia, Germany, Italy, Lithuania and Oman who attended all the festival’s activities throughout its duration and participated in the workshops, lectures and daily seminars. The festival’s guest of honor was the great Arab artist Yahia Al Fakharani.

The success of the festival’s first edition soon showed its fruits with more than one accomplishment for the Emirate of Fujairah. These accomplishments include:

- International recognition for the festival in its first edition from the International Theatre Institute ITI/ UNESCO and the International Monodrama Forum (IMF). His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Fujairah, received Dr. Manfred Beilharz, President of the International Theatre Institute ITI and Valery Khasanov president of the International Monodrama Forum. Dr. Beilharz presented His Highness with the official recognition certificate of the Fujairah International Monodrama Festival and commended his support of the festival and his patronage of the theatrical and cultural movement in the emirate which has had a deep impact in achieving the great international success of the festival.

- The festival’s director Mohamed Saif Al Afkham was chosen as vice-president of IMF and as a member of ITI’s Executive Board.

- The opening of the Monodrama House in Dibba Al-Fujairah. The Emirate of Fujairah and specifically the city of Dibba was chosen as the regional headquarters of ITI/UNESCO in the Arab Gulf region. This led to the opening of the regional centre of ITI in Dibba Al-Fujairah.
